  1. OVGA has updated Greg Martin's box art catalog to include two Sega Pico games: The Great Counting Caper with The 3 Blind Mice and Adventures in Letter Land with Jack & Jill. The original painting for The Great Counting Caper with The 3 Blind Mice has been listed on Heritage Auctions, and OVGA subsequently identified Adventures in Letter Land with Jack & Jill from the same publisher and year as also having been Greg Martin's work.
  2. Add those photos of those first-generation proofs! They were so cool to see
  3. European Mega Drive box art for Streets of Rage 3 recently identified and added to Steve Weston's bio!
  4. From what I've been able to find, the oversized Sub-Terrania poster was included with Direct Edition copies of these issues of Marvel's Doom 2099 and Ghost Rider 2099!
  5. Description: Steve Lang painted this art for Beeline Group to be the box art for Bug Blasters: The Exterminators, a Sega CD game intended to be released in 1995 by Sony Entertainment. The game was an on-the-rails shoot-'em-up game paired with many full motion video cutscenes, in which the Bug Blasters—Ghost Busters-like exterminators with a highly specialized weaponry—combat monstrous insects mutated from a chemical spill. The game was cancelled late in development after this box art had already been commissioned. Though the game was not officially released, it was completed and a prototype has since emerged. It was distributed commercially (without Steve's art) by Good Deal Games in 2001. Year: 1995 Medium: Acrylic on board Image Area: 16" x 30" Image Source: Original Condition:
  6. Neat seeing other Tatung Einstein box art and that John Higginbotham did more than just the Miner Dick piece I turned up. Interesting too that the art is double signed
  7. Excellent investigative work in the additional images! I think you're theory of this being the final painting (finished with digital touches and tweaks) makes sense to me. Great find!
  8. For anyone interested in reading that "Game Over" feature article, here is a link to a full scan of issue 3 of Edge Magazine. Paul's art appears as a full-page image on page 62 an the article runs from page 63 to 67.
  9. Description: Paul Kidby created this art for a feature article in the December 1993 issue of Edge magazine titled "Game Over." The article argued that game genres had led to stagnation in game design, but Paul's captivating painting more or less depicted the popular games of 1993. More than 30 years later, many of these characters remain instantly recognizable! Characters/games depicted: Goro from Mortal Kombat, Chun Li and Ken from Street Fighter, Indiana Jones, Luke Skywalker from Star Wars, and the T-Rex from Jurassic Park. Despite the difference in outfit, the female warrior at bottom right may be a nod to Tyris Flare from the Golden Axe series. Golden Axe III was previewed in some magazines in 1993. The ship at top left is from Star Fox and the helicopter likely represents the "Strike" series. Year: 1993 Medium: Acrylic on board Image Area: 42.5 cm x 59.5cm Image Source: Original Condition: Excellent
  10. Description: In 2020, Frank painted this "recreation" commission of his 1988 box art for Capcom's Bionic Commando for the NES. At the time of the commission, the whereabouts of the actual original box art were unknown, with Frank having sold it decades prior, likely at a comic convention or other similar show. To the surprise of many, the original painting for Bionic Commando (1988) surfaced at Heritage Auctions and was sold in January 2023; the auction achieved a final price of $45,600. The auction was won by none other than the same individual who had commissioned the 2020 recreation. No longer needing the recreation as a placeholder, this 2020 painting was also consigned to Heritage and I was lucky enough to win it in late 2023! Year: 2020 Medium: Acrylic/mixed media on cold press Crescent illustration board Image Area: 14.25" x 18.5" Image Source: Original Condition: Excellent
  11. Here's a great interview out today (February 24, 2024) with Wil Overton on his work for Super Play magazine: Wil Overton talks Super Play magazine, anime, video games and grey imports. — Forgotten Worlds
  12. Wow, this is one I absolutely love! Oh and hey, this is the 350th piece of art added to the gallery! 🥳
  13. Description: Pete McDonnell is responsible for this rather infamous ad art for The Combatribes in the form of a single-page comic that declares "Cyborgs Ain't Ladies!!" The only originals of Pete's that survived were one 11" x 14" pencil prelim and three color prelims (each is a photocopy of the final inked lines with original colored markers added on top: one is almost fully colored and two are just a single panel). Pete additionally turned up photocopies of an earlier draft or two, where there are differences to the comic text. Who'd have guessed that the first draft of "THWAAAK!" would have been "BOK!" Pete also included a signed double-sided flyer of the ad. While the front matches the ad that was published in magazines in 1993, the back has a game description, key selling points, and information on marketing support and pre-release media coverage. That info indicates the game would have been advertised from January through April 1993, including in GamePro, EGM, Nintendo Power, and Game Informer. As the flyer includes sales rep contact info for American Technos, the flyer was likely made for trade shows like CES. Year: 1992 Medium: Pencils on vellum (transparent paper) Image Area: 11" x 14" Image Source: Original Condition: Very good
  14. Description: Bud Thon's art for The Combatribes for the Super Nintendo. The painting was commissioned to be the game's box art but went unused; another artist's work was instead used. Bud's "THON" signature can be seen on the wrist of the right hand of the character in the center! Year: 1992 Medium: Airbrush (presumably acrylic paint) and inks on board Image Area: 16" x 10.5" with about a 3/4" bleed on all sides Image Source: Original Condition: Excellent
  15. One more Paul Kidby box art for the list: Time to Die (1989), as confirmed by Paul and Vanessa Kidby: Meanwhile, they confirmed that Kikstart 2, Kobayashi Naru, and Hundra are not his work
  16. Donato Giancola's original painting for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords (2004). 24”x32” Oil on Panel. This was likely originally set to be the game's package art. However, to its detriment, the final box art appears to be a digital reinterpretation of Donato's phenomenal work
  17. Looks like this art made it into a contemporaneous Japanese publication somewhere! This image is from Lost Media Archive, but I'm not sure of the actual source (i.e., publication) of the image: https://lostmediaarchive.fandom.com/wiki/Deja_Vu_II/Ace_Harding:_Lost_in_Las_Vegas_(Unreleased_NES_port)
  18. New find for Chris Dellorco: Tonka Search & Rescue 2 (2002) by Infogrames Interactive, Inc. for Macintosh and Windows. http://www.dellorcoart.com/dellorcoart/Portfolios/Pages/General.html#18
  19. Always glad to be able to identify and credit more box art to an artist, especially if they have passed away. I recently discovered that Lawrence Fletcher had illustrated the box art for New World Computing, Inc.'s Nuclear War, released in 1989 for the Amiga, Commodore 64, and DOS. His "Lars" signature is visible on the poster in a spot that is covered up on the box art with a "Caution" warning. I've added Nuclear War to his bio above as well as Chaos Overlords, which he also did for New World Computing. Chaos Overlords artwork sold on Heritage Auctions in January 2023: https://comics.ha.com/itm/video-games/video-game-art/lawrence-fletcher-chaos-overlords-computer-game-original-box-art-and-advertisement-art-new-world-computing-1996-/a/7348-28505.s?ic4=ListView-Thumbnail-071515
  20. This piece was sold in 2022, but here is a clean image of Tim's art for Leander. The game was also released for the Genesis/Mega Drive but with different art and under the name Galahad (or The Legend of Galahad).
  21. Based on a preliminary illustration shared to CAF, Donato Giancola appers to be the box artist for The Bard's Tale for Windows, PlayStation 2, and Xbox (2005): https://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1986573
  22. One more new one for Celal: Hollywood Poker Pro by reLINE Software for the Amiga, Atari ST, and Commodore 64 (1989) Separately, OVGA hasn't yet made a bio for Celal's brother Ogan Kandemiroglu, but today I came across his "Ogan" signature on Oxxonian by Time Warp Software GmbH (1989):
