  1. And another new one: Inve$t by StarByte Software for the Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, and DOS (1990). Steinar's signature can be seen on a German ad for the game
  2. While almost all of the time Tom would have only been brought in to illustrate the box art or promotional art, in an interview with Arcade Attack he shares that he actually had a hand in the creation of the Sparkster character (hence this page of concept art): "R.K.A. was the exception to the rule where they brought me in early on top create the Rocket Knight character. I remember Konami wanted to get a game out there to compete with Sonic the Hedgehog." https://www.arcadeattack.co.uk/tom-dubois-cover-artist/
  3. Credit here to @Jeremyamoto but this painting is the cover art for Game Zone, Volume 2, Issue 16 (February 1994). Apparently the original Game Zone magazine ran for one year (12 issues) and then split off into Game Zone Volume 2, which was Nintendo focused, and a new separate Sega Zone publication.
  4. Killer! This is my first time seeing this box art. I love that I'm still discovering "new" art for a series as famous as Tetris!
  5. Description: This is a preliminary sketch by Greg Hildebrandt for a poster included with Civilization 4: Gold Edition. The game was published by 2K Games for Windows in 2007. The foreground of this sketch has a few sections that were drawn separately and taped onto the main page to form the final composition, a process Greg often used to work out and hone various compositional elements. The sketch is signed at lower left. Greg talks about the creation of his poster painting in a series of three videos on YouTube. This preliminary piece appears to be shown in the first video just after the three minute mark here and throughout as Greg photographs reference material for his painting. Year: 2007 Medium: Pencil on paper Image Area: 19" x 15" (on a 21" x 18" piece of paper) Image Source: Original Condition:
  6. I hadn't thought much about it, but it looks like the title screen for each game used a flipped orientation, which could have been a consideration for the MD box art? The European Game Gear and SMS boxes are likewise flipped (but Portugual's SMS release is not, nor are Brazilian SMS or Game Gear releases)
  7. Description: Greg Martin's box art painting for Cheese Cat-Astrophe Starring Speedy Gonzales. Though Greg is more commonly associated with Hanna-Barbera properties he also did a number of illustrations for Warner Bros, including for this Looney Tunes game. This art was featured globally on all releases of the game. In the U.S., Cheese Cat-Astrophe only saw a Game Gear release, but in Europe the game also got Sega Master System and Mega Drive releases. Year: 1995 Medium: Airbrushed acrylic on board Image Area: Width x Height IN/CM Image Source: Original Condition: Excellent
  8. Description: Greg Martin's ad painting to promote the Sega Genesis version of Bubble and Squeak. The art appeared in 1994 issues of video game magazines. Bubble and Squeak also got an Amiga release in Europe, though that did release did not use any of the U.S. Sega Genesis artwork. This piece was was first purchased locally in Colorado from Greg Martin's estate and made its way to eBay in late 2019. The winning bidder traded it to another collector who a few years later consigned it to Heritage Auctions, whereby I was finally able to add it to my collection, after having seen it years ago in eBay "Sold Items" and realizing I'd missed out! Year:1994 Medium: Airbrushed acrylic on board Image Area: Width x Height IN/CM Image Source: Original Condition: Excellent
  9. As video game-related animation art is added to OVGA, we've discussed a little how to best handle the artist field. Likely the best "person" to credit is the actual animation studio versus a specific individual. So for example for your Night Warriors one, I updated that from Unknown to Madhouse Studios, who I also added as a credited artist for the Aeon Flux piece. Similarly, crediting Don Bluth Studios (rather than Don Bluth himself) for the Dragon Lair and Space Ace cels. For the two Fatal Fury cels you've uploaded, I'd be inclined to credit them to Studio Wombat. I'm not sure whether Masami Obari would have had a hand on these, but then again, he was the Director, Character Designer, and Chief Animation Director for the film
  10. Touching that you gifted this one to your dad!
  11. Here is a more in-depth interview Paul Mann gave in 2017 that through discussing a then-recent commission captures the work process for his paintings: https://illustrated007.blogspot.com/2017/02/interview-with-artist-paul-mann.html And another from 2022: https://layeredbutter.com/editorial/a-touch-of-genius
  12. Here's a little interview Paul Mann gave for Retro Gamer magazine issue 176, which featured Paul's soundtrack artwork for Contra III on the cover
  13. Here's one more for Steinar Lund that I'll add to his box art catalog above. Oriental Games by MicroProse (1990) for Amstrad CPC, Amiga, Atari ST, and ZX Spectrum.
  14. Excellent that you snagged this one! I always thought it was curious that he started with Bayou Billy for the first of these and not a bigger franchise like Contra or Castlevania. And now its been such a long while that I was skeptical others would be made! That said, just about week ago Tom put out a video of Super C artwork. Its all pencils, but looks like he did something similar for Bayou Billy, so maybe paint next?
  15. For me, I'm just in awe of how small Paul could work! He was clearly working with some very tiny brushes and he must have an incredibly steady hand
  16. Description: Box art painting for 688 Attack Sub for the Sega Genesis. This piece was the second box art I purchased for my collection! Year: 1990 Medium: Gouache on Crescent cold press no. 100 illustration board Image Area: 11.5" x 12" Image Source: Original Condition: Excellent
  17. Description: Cover art for the UK magazine Mega, featuring art for Afterburner III for the Sega CD. The front of the missile with the reflection appears to be a paste-up that was painted separately then affixed to the painting and blended in! Year: 1993 Medium: Airbrush on board Image Area: 19" x 20" Image Source: Original Condition: Excellent
  18. Description: Paul Kidby's box art painting for the European release of Takara's Battle Arena Toshinden. Paul shared that he had very little art direction for the assignment and was not provided any screenshots of the game, resulting in his more abstract take on the box art for the game. While the background of the painting appears to be airbrushed, the entirety of the emblem that makes up the main box art image is hand brushed and with quite a bit of fine detail. Year: 1995 Medium: Acrylic on board Image Area: 16.5" x 16.5" Image Source: Original Condition: Excellent
  19. This one is a little intriguing. Looking at the ad, does it look digitally rendered to you?
  20. Ah! That makes total sense! Two pieces created for the arcade that then got separately used on the front and back of the Game Boy box. Killer!
  21. Peringer's work is super sharp! I see some similarities to the GBC artwork for R-Type DX, but from Peringer's website, it would appear that that's a separate painting
  22. Description: Ad art for Beyond Oasis from Ken Steacy that appeared in gaming magazines. The published ad actually uses the eyes in the sky from Greg Winters' box art. Year: 1995 Medium: airbrush and inks Image Area: 10.75" x 16.25" Image Source: Original Condition: excellent
  23. Description: Greg Winters' box art painting for the Sega Genesis RPG Beyond Oasis. This game was known as Story of Thor in Europe and Japan. Year: 1994 Medium: Acrylic on board Image Area: 15" x 20" Image Source: Original Condition: bottom left corner is dented but otherwise excellent
