  1. Description: One of Mark Stutzman's first video game projects was the box art for Marvel's The Punisher, released in 1990 for DOS. Developed by Paragon Software and published and distributed by MicroProse Software, which would later acquire Paragon in 1992. This is an absolutely striking rendering of The Punisher, and among the best for Punisher video game licensees. Due to limited printing techniques at the time, the game's title/logo was incorporated directly into the box art painting. In addition, "TM" text below the title was added with a dry transfer type like Letraset. The artwork shows minor fading, most visible at bottom right where Mark signed his name. The piece had at one point been framed for a gallery show but did not have archival glass with UV protection, as it was far less common/affordable back then. The slightly darker areas at the outside had been covered by the mat. Year: 1990 Medium: Watercolor and gouache on stripped board Image Area: 17" x 21" (on 21" x 25" board) Image Source: Original Condition: Very good, with slight fading
  2. Description: This is a tight marker prelim for a very rare promotional trade flyer for the NES game Werewolf: The Last Warrior from Data East. I cannot find any record online of the published flyer for this art other than the one I own. I suspect this would have been used at a trade event like the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), probably ahead of or around the time of the game's release in November 1990. Unfortunately, the final inked line art for this promotional flyer has been lost. The flyer itself folds in the center and opens like a book, with artwork on the outside and information about the game on the inside. Year: 1990 Medium: Marker on vellum Image Area: 14" x 9" (on 16 3/4" x 11" page) Image Source: Original Condition: Very good; page previously folded in middle
  3. Description: The artist Pete McDonnell was the character designer for Data East's Werewolf: The Last Warrior for the NES. In working on the game Pete created and Activision focus-tested character concepts for not only for a Werewolf but also for a Lizard man and a bear named “Kodiak.” This illustration done in markers is a composition ("comp") design for the game's box art. Pete was contracted to provide the design, which served as the basis for the work of another, unknown illustrator that did the final box art. Also photographed in Additional Images is a photocopied page of a similar comp Pete provided the same client. Year: 1990 Medium: Markers on paper Image Area: 8.5" x 11" Image Source: Original Condition: Very good
