  1. Description: This fun platformer was both developed and published by Natsume in 1991 for the Game Boy and is Mark Fredrickson's first piece of game artwork. It features a wonderfully large cover that highlights the sneaker culture of the early 1990s and displays all the villains and scenarios of the game itself. The game was later republished by Limited Run Games in 2021 for the Game Boy using a brand new photo of this artwork. Year: 1991 Medium: Acrylic on board Image Area: 18 x 26 inches

  2. Description: Steve Lang's Taz-Mania art was used for the PAL Super Nintendo release by THQ as well as for THQ's Taz-Mania for the Game Boy, both released in 1993. Taz-Mania for SNES had two separate publishers, Sunsoft in the United States and THQ in Europe. THQ frequently worked with the Beeline Group and accordingly appears to have commissioned its own art for Europe's release of Taz-Mania for the Super Nintendo in 1993. Around the same time, THQ also released Taz-Mania for the Game Boy and us

  4. Description: This is an awesome piece of NES-era artwork for Tetris 2. For reasons unknown, Nintendo used a different (and far inferior) piece of artwork for the published box cover. I made the box mockup myself in photoshop to display how it would have looked had it been published. The painting also has a preliminary drawing with the logo on vellum. 5. Description: This is a full size, completely hand-done color comprehensive ("comp") for The Adventures of Rad Gravity for the NES. Color prelims like this were sometimes a step in-between the approval of the box art layout/design and the final painting. Whether for art director/client approval or just as part of the artist’s work process, these mock-ups let an artist work out the colors for a painting before committing brush to board. As artists weren't paid to produce these (i.e. they got one t

  11. Description: The final published image for this Flintstones GBA game was slightly rearranged, presumably to accommodate the game's title/logo. Given the small, square shape of the GBA boxes that meant flipping and moving around a few elements from the final inked image. Included below is an early image of the game's box prior to publication. It also shows Fred with a slightly different facial expression. Changes from that pre-publication image were made to Fred, accomplished by using new lines o

  15. Description: One of Mark Stutzman's first video game projects was the box art for Marvel's The Punisher, released in 1990 for DOS. Developed by Paragon Software and published and distributed by MicroProse Software, which would later acquire Paragon in 1992. This is an absolutely striking rendering of The Punisher, and among the best for Punisher video game licensees. Due to limited printing techniques at the time, the game's title/logo was incorporated directly into the box art painting. In addi
